This guide covers the sequence, the timelines, the data-security rules, and how to sell every stream.

THE SEQUENCE

How a data center comes apart, in order

Teardowns follow a strict order. Knowing it tells you when each equipment stream becomes available — and when to have its buyer lined up.

1. IT equipment first

Servers, storage, and network gear come out first so data can be sanitized and the asset trail closed. This stream belongs with a certified ITAD firm — serialized chain of custody, NIST 800-88 sanitization, certificates of data destruction. Do not mix it with the power sale.

2. UPS and batteries

Once the IT load is gone, the UPS systems and battery strings come offline. Battery date codes matter enormously here — a two-year-old string and a five-year-old string are different assets. Photograph the date codes before disconnection.

3. Distribution: PDUs, RPPs, busway

Power distribution units, remote power panels, and overhead busway come out next. Busway is heavy copper in an aluminum housing — one of the most undervalued streams in the whole teardown.

4. Cooling

CRAC/CRAH units, condensers, and chilled-water equipment. Specialized buyers exist, but the copper coils and piping also feed the metals stream.

5. Generators and transformers last

Standby generators and transformers are typically the last major equipment out — they are heavy, need rigging, and often need the building power maintained until the end. Low-hour standby generators from data centers are the gold standard of the used market.

6. The cable plant, throughout

Copper pulls happen alongside every phase: feeder cable, branch circuits, PDU whips, grounding grids. In a large facility this is tons of copper. The most common mistake in decommissioning is letting this stream leave in a demo contractor’s truck unpriced.

TIMING

How long decommissioning takes

Small server rooms: days

A single enterprise server room or small colocation suite can be decommissioned in 1–3 days once data is cleared — a straightforward equipment sale.

Mid-size facilities: weeks

A multi-megawatt enterprise or colocation data center typically takes 2–6 weeks: phased IT removal, electrical decommissioning, rigging for heavy gear, and copper recovery.

Hyperscale: months

Large-scale closures run for months with dedicated project teams. Equipment from these projects moves in volume — entire UPS lineups and generator farms sold as packages.

DATA SECURITY

The data rules, plainly stated

We buy power equipment — but every decommissioning touches data, so here are the rules that govern the IT side. Get this wrong and the equipment value is the least of your problems.

NIST 800-88 sanitization

The federal standard for media sanitization defines three levels: Clear, Purge, and Destroy. Drives that cannot be purged must be physically destroyed. Your ITAD provider should work to this standard explicitly.

Serialized chain of custody

Every data-bearing asset tracked by serial number from your rack to final disposition, with sign-offs at each handoff. If a provider cannot show you this paper trail, find another provider.

Certificates of destruction

For destroyed media, a certificate per serial number. These are your legal proof — keep them with the project file permanently.

MAXIMIZING VALUE

Five rules for a profitable teardown

1. Photograph nameplates before disconnection

Model numbers, serial numbers, kVA ratings, and battery date codes are easiest to capture while equipment is still powered and labeled. After disconnection, identification gets harder and values get vaguer.

2. Split the IT and power streams

One contractor for everything is convenient and expensive. IT gear goes to an ITAD, power gear goes to a power buyer. Each stream priced by a specialist beats a single blended bid.

3. Price the copper separately

The cable plant — feeders, whips, busway copper, grounding — should be its own line item, not buried in a demolition bid. Get the copper quote before the demo contract is signed.

4. Keep maintenance records

UPS service logs, generator exercise records, battery replacement dates, load-bank test reports. Documentation is the difference between “used equipment” and “documented, maintained equipment” — buyers pay for the second one.

5. Line up buyers before the power goes off

The best offers come while the equipment is still installed and demonstrable. Start the sales conversation during planning, not after everything is sitting on pallets in a parking lot.

How do we handle data security?

All data-bearing media goes through your ITAD provider under NIST 800-88 sanitization with serialized chain of custody and certificates of destruction. Our purchase covers power equipment only — no data-bearing assets.

When should we contact you in the process?

As early as possible — during planning, before disconnection. Nameplates are easiest to read and equipment easiest to value while still installed. Early contact also lets us sequence the power sale around your ITAD schedule.

Do you handle the electrical disconnection and rigging?

Electrical disconnection must be performed by licensed electricians, and heavy equipment needs professional rigging. We discuss logistics — including who handles what — as part of the offer conversation.

Do you buy single units or only full teardowns?

Both. A single retired UPS or generator gets the same serious review as a full facility lot.
